Card Meaning

The Tarot’s Major Arcana card Number 13 is Death. Now don’t be frightened. This card doesn’t mean you or someone close to you will drop dead. The Death card symbolizes death in a metaphorical sense. Something old is coming to a close to make room for new. Admittedly, it’s probably not a smooth and easy transition but has such profound and obvious effects that it can be seen and felt clearly.

At the end of a cycle in your life, a relationship, work or anything else, things must come to an end to make room for a new path in that area of your life, although often, this has repercussions across the board. For example, when you either lose your job or it changes in a way that it seems unbearable to you and you cannot continue with it any longer, it is not only time to look for a new occupation, but also to take a look at yourself and find out what you want to do next. It may not be the same thing in a new environment.

Death denotes drastic changes and you may find yourself questioning your outlook on life, your view on things and possibly ask yourself whether changing your job altogether is the best step to take at this time. This can also have ripple effects on your personal relationships in one form or another – and the list goes on. Everything is connected; and when you go through a Death period, you will incur inner changes that show in your outer environment in all sorts of ways and in many areas of your life.

Death is by no means an easy card to deal with, it can be a great challenge, but also, it can be one of your greatest opportunities in life. When you see this sudden and drastic change not as a catastrophe, but a blessing, take time out to find out what you really want to do from here, walk a new path and make new life decisions, there is enormous potential for growth and expansion on a personal and spiritual level.

The big question is not how can you pick up the shards and stick them back together, so the glue holds for you to get back to “normal.” There is no normal and things are no longer what they used to be. Instead, focus on rising above the fear and chaos you might experience at first and embrace the new door that has opened up for you, the new you that you are becoming – and you get to choose who that person is! – and find a new, greater, more glorious path to walk, person to become and embrace that change with joy, fortitude and confidence.

Know that you are always safe, always protected and always taken care of. Don’t allow anything to hold you back on becoming an ever greater version of yourself. As the snake sheds its skin when it has outgrown it, thus Death brings you changes and offers you a larger skin to wear. It is up to you how you create your life anew from hereon forth. Through all alternatives you are offered by life, by your soul and heart, choose the one that fits you best. The new, brighter and more glorious you. And then allow yourself to shine!

You don’t need to invent a whole new Self overnight. Be gentle and patient with yourself and take the time you need to adjust to the new situation in your life. It would also be advisable to get into some extra special selfcare in order to support yourself in lessening the impact of releasing the old and give you the strength to move forward at this time.
