Aragonite is a Calcium Corbonate in crystal form, a naturally occurring mineral. It has a white translucent colour, is soft and water-soluble. Due to inclusions, the stone's colour is typically dark brown or black. Red, white, yellow, orange-red and shades of green specimen have also been found. The crystal can form clusters that resemble beautiful underwater flora and fauna with their leaf-like, branching formations.
General Information & Legends

Aragonite was first identified in the late 18th century in the Aragon region of Spain, from which it derives its name. In 1797, German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner formally described Aragonite, distinguishing it from other calcium carbonate minerals by its distinctive orthorhombic crystal structure. This discovery marked the beginning of the scientific recognition and classification of Aragonite.
Because of the suffering of humans, Gaia wept and her tears crystallized into Aragonite, according to legend. To those who found them, these crystals were said to provide comfort and healing as they held her protective energy. The crystal was often buried under the foundations of houses and in fields to ensure fertility and prosperity and to protect against natural disasters.
In ancient times, Egyptians and Romans valued Aragonite for its beauty and used it not only for jewellery or art, but also some practical purposes. In Ancient Rome, the spring waters of the Goddess Vesta were believed to hold miraculous healing properties, rejuvenating those who bathed in them and curing diseases. The crystals from this spring were highly valued and used in various elixirs and healing rituals. This legend not only emphasises the protective and nurturing properties through its connection with the Goddess, but also its association with rejuvenation and healing.
In Chinese mythology, the sea dragon Ao Guang lived in an underwater palace where he kept a treasure of Aragonite crystals. Sailors and fishermen carried Aragonite crystals for protection and good luck because the crystal was supposed to be imbued with the power and wisdom of the dragon deity, thus ensuring the carriers to have a safe voyage and bountiful catches.
Another legend of the Amazon rainforest tells of a forest that is entirely made up of Aragonite crystals. The local tribes' myths tell that god Tupa created it to provide a sanctuary for the spirits of the forest. The trees had an inner glow that would guide lost people to safety. To receive wisdom, healing energy and to commune with the spirits, healers and shamans would visit this forest, too, as Aragonite is a conduit for divine energy.
In Medieval fairytales, there was a story of a garden where Aragonite grew like flowers. This garden was guarded by an owl and protected by fairies. Many knights and adventurers sought to find this garden to gain favour with the fairies.
In the Middle Ages, alchemists were highly attracted to this crystal. Its ability to transform under different environmental conditions was consistent with alchemical principles of transmutation and transformation. Renaissance Naturalists such as Georgius Agricola and Conrad Gessner documented various minerals, including Aragonite, contributing to the foundations of modern mineralogy, which was later developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In the Swiss Alps, there is a story of a giant who used to wander the mountains. When he died, his heart turned into Aragonite and was buried deep in a mountain, spreading a warm glow to the surrounding villages and protecting the people from avalanches and harsh winter, crucial to survival in this hard environment. This story is testimony of these people's faith in Aragonite's power to provide enduring strength and resilience.
Native American tribes from the southwest of the USA have a myth about a warrior called White Eagle who wore an unbreakable shield that could repel any weapon, a gift from the Great Spirit, made entirely of Aragonite, giving White Eagle protection and strength in battle. After the warrior's death, the shield was buried with him and protects his people to this day.
Aragonite has a reputation for being a powerhouse in the world of crystal healing. It has a knack for bringing things that are denied and swept under the carpet out into the open. This is particularly helpful when searching for the root of a problem. Aragonite will bring it to light, which makes it a strong ally when doing shadow work and delving into your own subconscious to gain insight, clarity and promote healing.
You can wear Aragonite as jewellery, carry it in your purse or pocket, or place it in your healing and meditational space at home.
