Composition
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, nodules and occasional small prismatic crystals. It's commonly found with a color scheme consisting of chalky white with black veins running throughout. However it can also be seen as brown or even colorless. It is made up of hydrous calcium borate and has a high calcium content. Howlite is usually a porcelain-like white or ivory colour or light grey porous stone with grey, black, or brown veining. It’s often dyed blue to resemble Turquoise or red to look like Coral. The blue stone may be named as Blue Howlite or Turquenite because of its resemblance to Turquoise.
General Information & Legends
Howlite was first documented in 1868 in a Canadian Gypsum mine in Nova Scotia. The miners complained about a stone that was getting in the way of their mining, and this complaint soon came to the attention of Henry How (1828-1879), a mineralogist connected with the Nova Scotia Museum. How soon determined that the stone was actually a new mineral and he included it in his book, The Mineralogy of Nova Scotia, calling it “silico-boro-calcite.” After How’s death, one of his students, James Dwight Dana (1813-1895), re-named the mineral Howlite in honor of his teacher.
Don't get Howlite confused with Magnesite (usually from Zimbabwe, often mislabelled as Howlite, so be sure of the origin of your crystal to avoid being deceived).
Howlite is a stone of inner peace, patience and wisdom. Because it connects to the Root and Crown Chakra almost instantly, it is a powerful crystal. This is a unique combination, with Howlite opening up portals of entry on opposite points of the etheric body. But it also works effectively with all of the chakras and especially the Third Eye Chakra; helping you to connect to higher realms.
