Mother of Light

Theia is the Greek Goddess of sight and vision, symbolising the power of perception and clear sight in understanding the world, of precious metals and gemstones, giving them their sparkle and shine. She is one of the twelve original Titans, the deities that ruled before the Olympian Gods, who were ousted from power when Zeus overcame his father Cronos and took the throne.

Theia, meaning divine in the feminine form, also known as Thea, Thia, Euryphaessa, Aethra or Basileia, is the daughter of Gaia, Goddess of the earth, and Uranus, God of the sky. Her brother-consort is Hyperion, God of light, with whom she had three children, Helios, God of the sun, Selene, Goddess of the moon, and Eos (Roman Aurora), Goddess of dawn.

Like her brother-consort Hyperion, she isn’t often mentioned in myths. Her claim to fame is mostly about the children she bore. But that doesn’t mean we should underestimate her. She does appear in some texts and certain rare traditions, however.

Pindar, an ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes described Theia as:

“Mother of the Sun, Theia of many names, for your sake men honour gold as more powerful than anything else; and through the value you bestow on them, O queen, ships contending on the sea and yoked teams of horses in swift-whirling contests become marvels.”

- Pindar, Isthmian Odes 5.1 ff

Daily Life & Mythology

We see here that mythology and daily life were heavily interwoven in ancient culture. The Odes refer to the Isthmian Games, one of the Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece that were named after the Isthmus of Corinth, where they took place. Here, Pindar describes secular sports being elevated through shining apparel bestowed on humankind by the Goddess.

In another text, the Hymn to Helios by Homer, Theia, is described as “mild-eyed Euryphaessa, the far-shining one.” Euryphaessa is her original name while Theia was at first an epithet, it comes from two root words, eurys, meaning wide, and phaos, meaning light. The English poet Robert Graves also stated that she was described as “cow-eyed Euryphaessa,” which reminds us of the Egyptian Goddess Hathor, the name Hat-Hor meaning abode of Horus (the solar ancient Egyptian falcon God), and Theia is called Mother of the Sun by Pindar. He also goes on to say she has many names, hinting at an assimilation of Mother Goddesses in general and mother-of-the-sun Goddesses in particular.

Theia, as Euryphaessa, is the one bringing, creating light, glamour, glitter and glory. She makes things shine, shows them in the best light and thus brings divinity to the ordinary. It was never about worshipping gold as a tool to amass wealth, power and comfort. Gold has the highest vibration of all metals.

Multi-Layered Meaning

It is advised to wear gold on your person daily to help keeping up your vibrations. If you’ve seen me on pictures and videos, you may have noticed that I always wear a gold necklace under my top that you can see peeping out hanging from my neck. This has the same purpose. In ancient Egypt, for example, gold was rare and reserved for statues of deities and members of the royal family. For anyone else, wearing or even possessing gold was sometimes even criminalised with the death penalty as punishment.

Throughout history, people wore precious metals and gems to not only show off their wealth, but the frequencies of these metals and gems were also believed to carry power and give the wearer an advantage over the common people. Some people nowadays who don’t subscribe to the mainstream narrative of history, are convinced that technologies were used widely that were later suppressed by the people in power. For example, in what is called “Tartaria,” copper antennae were used to syphon free energy on spires and roofs of buildings for the inhabitants and even whole communities. Precious gems and other shiny surfaces like Venetian mirrors were linked to technologies believed to be deliberately suppressed later.

Whether you believe this to be true or not, the fact remains that people throughout history lived lives that were closely intertwined with their spiritual beliefs and maybe practices and technologies they thought of as beneficial. And thus, we cannot dismiss these statements as people pursuing shiny objects alone. Everything had meaning on multiple levels and people lived their lives according to these beliefs – or knowledge that was later buried to better control people by those in power, as the case may be.

Looking at Theia in this way, it becomes apparent that this Goddess was way more than just the “It-Girl” of the old Greek pantheon, but rather, as creator of light, she brought clarity, wisdom and divine truth by shining that light on the hidden, the shadows, the ignorance. She set the value of things. It is a spiritual statement and practice with very practical applications in mundane life that shows us how rich and multi-dimensional the ancient people were in their worldview. Theia is the mother of the sun. She creates light, rather than merely shine it. Without her, illumination would not be possible for the light would never exist.

Revelation

Theia sees the long game and recognises what is of value and worth, long before anyone else does. When you want to work with Theia, connect to her in the moments you stand at a crossroads, when you are trying to discern what is fear and what is intuition, what is the best path or option to take in the long run, that will yield the most value and benefits to your life. When you hold something in your hand, not knowing whether it’s a worthless trinket or true gold, when you feel you know what is coming but are still waiting for the world to catch up.

Theia can help you with all of that. She is the creator of light that shines far and wide, illuminating darkness, making things visible you didn’t notice before. She also knows where to direct that light, showing you possible outcomes that you may never have considered before, simply because they didn’t occur to you or were hidden so deep within your psyche that you couldn’t access them. Thus, Theia is a guide for seeing clearly, both what’s right in front of you and what’s around the corner. She doesn’t scream the answers. She just helps you recognize what you already know.

A Vision of Theia

When I connected to Theia for the first time, she appeared to me surrounded by golden light. She also had this golden light shining out of her eyes and palms. I felt so happy in her presence. Without having said a word yet, she made me feel like she was going to share insight into things in my current life and future with me. Then she pointed past me and I turned around to look.

I saw myself in a white house with blue shutters on a sunny Greek island on holiday. I sat on the roof terrasse and was smiling, relaxed and blissfully happy. Greece isn’t on my list of places to visit, or at least not near the top. However, there I was, absolutely happy overlooking an azure sea. Not that I’m complaining, I’ve been to Athens and on the island of Skiatos as a child and absolutely loved it.

But what struck me the most was that I was just relaxing and content to do so. I wasn’t exploring ancient sites, meditating or anything like that, which usually is the first thing I plan for when I travel to locations rich in history. Instead, I was merely relaxed and being in the moment without any agenda other than indulging in the peace, the view and the salad with feta cheese in front of me that I instinctively knew was absolutely delicious.

As this was the only scene in my vision of my future self, I can’t tell you if there was a stopover at any ancient sites but in that moment, that didn’t matter. I had equated being successful with always working, learning, doing spiritual practices and so on. Theia showed me that this wasn’t the case. I was resting and recharging in the most beautiful location, no electronic devices anywhere near me, no checking messages, answering mails, teaching on Zoom or posting anything.

Meeting Theia

After this vision, I turned back to look at her.

“No need to be afraid of overwhelm. Success means balance, to create with ease and joy, not to hustle yourself into an early grave by burnout.”

And then she giggled at the thought. She actually giggled! I loved her playfulness in that moment so much. It made me feel light and free. It took a pressure off me I knew I was carrying yet hadn’t realised the true extent of it before. I hugged her tightly and she hugged me back fiercely. It felt so warmhearted and affectionate.

“A few weeks ago, I hadn’t even heard of you and now, here we are,” I said with a happy sigh and she kissed my cheek.

“It’s not all doom and gloom, you know. Yes, the world is in turmoil and things come out that were only a year ago dismissed to be mere fantasies of crazy fringe conspiracy theorists. And I know you knew then, but the world wasn’t ready for it. There is a reason I came to you now. To usher in a new world is to shed light on everything. The good and the bad, to illumine the truth and then be able to choose with discernment how to proceed. You are taking stock and the path ahead will reveal itself. As you do this, you heal and grow in wisdom – and with it, in foresight.

“It is now up to you to choose to not be led by momentary emotions and sensitivities but to see patterns, know cycles and use your heart, intuition, knowledge and experience to build a brighter future. For yourself and the collective. And this goes for you individually as much as for the collective as well. When you each do your piece in concert with the whole, contribute to a common goal of a brighter future for all, that is the way to uplift the world.”

Her words made me feel empowered. I am a cog in the wheel, and yet, I am unique and have my place, my own importance, as we all have.

Theia and I hugged again, then she turned and walked away into the golden, glowing light until she was lost from sight but never will be erased again from my heart. I was already looking forward to connecting more with her and follow her guidance. At this thought, I heard her voice in my head, “I am always here.”

Yes, she is. Her glow and radiance remain inside me.
